Airalo is the largest dedicated travel eSIM store, selling prepaid data packages for more than 200 countries and regions to a claimed 30 million customers. In July 2025 it became the industry's first unicorn after a $220 million funding round led by CVC, so it is also the best-capitalised independent player in the market. The obvious question is whether the biggest name is still the best buy in 2026.

Our research found that Airalo's real strength is not any single headline number but the sheer range of sensible options: local, regional and global eSIMs, fixed-data bundles from $4.00, unlimited packages in over 100 destinations, top-ups, a loyalty scheme and, on selected plans, even calls and texts. No rival matches that combination, which is why we have titled this review "the best all-round option" rather than the cheapest or the most generous. On our standard criteria - price, coverage, network quality, plan flexibility, transparency, ease of use, hotspot support and customer service - Airalo scores well almost everywhere without topping every category.

It is not flawless. "Unlimited" plans throttle hard after a daily allowance, refunds for a simple change of mind are paid only in store credit, and support can be slow when something genuinely breaks. This review sets out the evidence so you can decide whether those trade-offs matter for your trip.

Plans and pricing in detail

Local, regional and global eSIMs

Airalo sells three tiers of eSIM. Local eSIMs cover a single country. Regional eSIMs cover a group, such as the Europe eSIM spanning 42 countries and networks, plus equivalents for Asia, Latin America, Africa, the Caribbean and others. Global Discover eSIMs cover most of the world from $8.50, with long-validity options such as 10GB over 180 days or 20GB over 365 days for occasional travellers who want one eSIM for every trip. Fixed-data local plans remain among the cheapest mainstream options. For Japan, Airalo listed 1GB for 3 days at $4.00, 5GB for 30 days at $11.00, 10GB for 30 days at $18.00, 20GB for 30 days at $25.00 and 100GB over 180 days at $89.00, on SoftBank, KDDI and NTT Docomo with 5G support. Note the catch on the headline price: the very cheapest 1GB plans now often carry short 3-day validity, while the app listing quotes entry pricing of $4.50 for a 1GB week.

Unlimited plans in the United States (T-Mobile plus one other network) ran from $11.50 for 3 days to $69.00 for 30 days. Japan unlimited ranged from $11.50 for 3 days to $72.00 for 30 days, and the Europe regional unlimited eSIM matched that at $11.50 to $72.00. Independent 2026 reviews put typical mid-size bundles at $13 to $18 for 5GB/30 days in the UK and $18 to $22 for regional Europe coverage.

That pricing is competitive but rarely the outright cheapest: Nomad and MobiMatter frequently undercut Airalo on a per-gigabyte basis, and a local SIM bought in-country is usually cheaper still outside North America. What you are paying for is choice, a mature app and predictable behaviour.

Unlimited plans: read the fair use policy first

Airalo's unlimited packages, now available in more than 100 destinations, are daily-capped plans in all but name. The published fair use policy is at least transparent: "when you use more than 3GB in a day, we'll slow down (or 'throttle') your internet speed to 1 Mbps for the rest of that day", with full speed restored at midnight local time. At 1 Mbps you can message, navigate and load simple pages, but streaming and large downloads crawl. The default threshold can vary by package, so check the product page before buying. The policy also bans resale, SIM farms, bulk messaging and deliberately congesting the network.

To Airalo's credit, tethering is explicitly unrestricted on these plans: "There is no limit on tethering or the number of devices you connect." That is more generous than Holafly's traditional hotspot stance, though Holafly's fair use allowance on some carriers is broader. Calls, texts and the Discover+ number

Most Airalo eSIMs are data-only, which suits travellers who live in WhatsApp and FaceTime. Two exceptions matter. First, some local packages are sold as "Data, Voice & Text", but these are strictly for domestic use: "These eSIMs do not support international calls or texts." Second, the Discover+ global eSIM includes a US-based international phone number with the +1 code, and can make and receive calls and texts worldwide. Minutes round up, incoming texts are free, and top-ups come only as combined data, call and SMS bundles. Buying, activating and topping up

Installation is by QR code or direct in-app activation, and the eSIM can be installed before departure and activated on arrival. The app supports 53 languages and multiple currencies, and most packages start their validity clock only when the eSIM first connects to a supported network. Reviewers consistently rate installation as straightforward, though a minority of app-store reviews call the instructions "too verbose and confusing", and Android users occasionally need manual APN settings.

Top-ups work through the My eSIMs tab, but only on "rechargeable" eSIMs. Airalo's help centre is clear: "Only rechargeable eSIMs can be topped up", and if the network partner behind a package changes, the top-up button disappears and you must buy a new eSIM. eKYC identity checks in some countries

A detail many buyers miss: some local eSIMs legally require identity verification before use. Airalo's help centre confirms that "some countries require you to verify your identity", typically by uploading a passport through a third-party verification provider, sometimes with a proof of address. Processing "typically takes a few days", and Airalo advises completing it up to a week before travel. Airalo does not publish a master list; the requirement is flagged in each eSIM's "Additional information" section, so check before you buy for markets with strict SIM registration rules (Hong Kong's real-name registration regime is a well-known industry example). Interestingly, Airalo sidesteps the issue in some markets by selling roaming-based packages: its partner documentation confirms "the package that covers UAE does not require eKYC" because it is a roaming rather than a local product.

Refunds, support and what customers complain about

The refund policy is fair in structure but has a sting. Expired or fully used eSIMs are not eligible at all. If your reason is "wrong purchase" or "plans changed", the refund is paid only in Airmoney, Airalo's store credit. Only for installation or technical failures can you choose a refund to your original payment method, which "typically takes 7-10 business days (or up to 30 days, depending on your bank)". Frequent refunders are routed to manual review.

Support is 24/7 via in-app chat and email, with no phone line. Aggregate sentiment is solid rather than stellar: Trustpilot rates Airalo "Great" at around 4.0 out of 5 across roughly 29,000 reviews. Recurring complaint themes across Trustpilot, the app stores and independent reviews are consistent: eSIMs that fail to connect in specific countries, slow or scripted support responses when problems are technical ("they return to you a week or more later", one App Store reviewer wrote), refund friction, and prices that look poor next to local SIMs for heavy users. Loyalty programme and 2025-26 changes

Airalo's loyalty scheme is genuinely useful for repeat travellers, and rare in this market. Four tiers - Traveler, Silver, Gold and Platinum - earn 5%, 6%, 7% and 10% back in Airmoney respectively, with tier thresholds at $20, $70 and $200 of cumulative spend. Airmoney offsets future purchases, and since change-of-mind refunds arrive as Airmoney anyway, frequent users will find the credit easy to absorb.

The last eighteen months brought meaningful changes. The $220 million round in July 2025 made Airalo the first eSIM unicorn and funded expansion into voice, SMS and broader unlimited coverage. Unlimited packages grew to more than 100 destinations. The Discover+ tier added a usable global phone number. App ratings, meanwhile, have drifted slightly below the 4.7/4.6 figures Airalo still advertises: on 18 July 2026 the live listings showed 4.6 on iOS and 4.5 on Android.

The verdict

Airalo remains the best all-round travel eSIM in 2026. No competitor combines its coverage, plan variety, top-ups, loyalty rewards and optional voice service in one account, and its fair use terms, while restrictive, are at least published in plain language. The weaknesses are real: throttled "unlimited" plans, credit-only refunds for mistakes, and support that struggles under technical load. If your priority is truly unrestricted heavy data use or rock-bottom per-gigabyte cost, look elsewhere. For everyone else - the majority of travellers who want one dependable app that works almost anywhere - Airalo is the sensible default, and the one we benchmark every other provider against.
